How to Seal Jelly with Wax

Sealing homemade jelly with wax was once a common method of preserving food, especially before modern canning techniques became widely available. Today, it’s less common due to safety concerns, but many people are still curious about the traditional process. Here’s a look at how it’s done, and what you should consider.

Step 1: Prepare the Jelly

Cook your jelly according to the recipe and pour it into sterilized glass jars while it’s still hot. Leave a little headspace (about ½ inch) at the top of each jar.

Step 2: Melt the Wax

Use paraffin wax for sealing. Place wax chunks in a double boiler and heat gently until fully melted. Do not overheat, as paraffin is flammable.

Step 3: Pour the Wax Seal

Carefully pour about ¼ inch of melted wax over the surface of the hot jelly. Tilt the jar slightly if needed to ensure the wax completely covers the surface.

Step 4: Add a Second Layer (Optional)

For extra protection, once the first wax layer has hardened, you can pour a second thin layer on top.

Step 5: Store Properly

Let the jars cool completely. Store in a cool, dark place. Be aware that wax sealing does not guarantee long-term food safety compared to modern canning methods.

⚠️ Important Note: Modern food safety experts recommend water bath or pressure canning instead of wax sealing, as the wax method does not always prevent spoilage or bacterial growth.
