How to Color Gel Candle Wax

Gel candle wax is a unique and transparent medium that allows you to create stunning decorative candles. Unlike traditional soy or paraffin wax, gel wax needs special care when coloring, as not every dye works well with it. The right coloring technique will help you achieve vibrant, clear, or tinted effects without making your gel cloudy.

Step 1: Choose the Right Dye

Not all dyes are suitable for gel wax. You should use liquid dyes or oil-based dyes specifically made for gel candles. Powdered dyes and crayons can make the gel cloudy and ruin the transparency.

Step 2: Melt the Gel Wax

Heat your gel wax slowly to around 200°F (93°C) in a double boiler. Avoid overheating, as too much heat can break down the gel’s consistency.

Step 3: Add the Dye

Once the gel wax is fully melted, add a few drops of the chosen dye. Stir gently and evenly until the color blends in. Always start with a small amount—you can deepen the color later by adding more.

Step 4: Test the Shade

Scoop a little melted gel wax onto a metal spoon and let it cool. This shows you the true final shade. If it’s too light, add a little more dye and test again until you achieve the desired color.

Step 5: Pour and Set

After reaching the color you like, pour the colored gel wax into your prepared jars or molds with wicks. Let it cool and set completely. You’ll end up with beautifully tinted candles that keep their clarity and glow.
