Gel wax candles are beautiful because of their crystal-clear, glass-like appearance. However, bubbles trapped inside can ruin the look and affect the burn quality. Fortunately, with the right techniques, you can minimize or even eliminate bubbles in your gel wax candles.
1. Melt the Wax Slowly
Heat the gel wax slowly over low to medium heat. Rushing the melting process can trap air inside, creating unwanted bubbles. Use a double boiler or a controlled heating pot to keep temperatures stable.
2. Watch the Temperature
The ideal pouring temperature for gel wax is between 95°C – 110°C (200°F – 230°F) depending on the type of fragrance and dye you’re using. If the wax is too hot, it may release excessive bubbles; too cold, and air pockets can form during pouring.
3. Preheat Your Containers
Pouring gel wax into a cold container can cause bubbles to form. Warm your glass jars slightly in the oven (around 150°F / 65°C for 5–10 minutes) before pouring in the wax.
4. Add Fragrance Oil Carefully
When adding fragrance oil, stir gently and slowly. Stirring too vigorously can introduce unnecessary air into the wax. Make sure your fragrance oil is designed for gel wax to prevent cloudiness.
5. Pour Slowly and Steadily
When it’s time to pour, do it in a slow and steady stream close to the container’s side. This reduces the chance of air being trapped inside.
6. Let Candles Settle
After pouring, allow your candles to rest undisturbed. Some small bubbles may naturally rise to the top and disappear during cooling.
By practicing patience and careful handling, you can achieve perfectly clear gel wax candles that look professional and stunning.
