How to Make Candles with Gel Wax

Gel candles are a creative and beautiful alternative to traditional wax candles. Unlike soy or paraffin wax, gel wax is transparent, which allows you to create stunning designs by embedding decorative items such as shells, beads, or dried flowers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making candles with gel wax.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Gel wax
  • Candle wicks
  • Heat-resistant containers (glass jars work best)
  • Fragrance oils (optional)
  • Liquid candle dye (specially made for gel wax)
  • Decorative items (shells, glass beads, etc.)

Step 2: Prepare the Container

Secure the wick in the center of the container using glue or a wick holder. This ensures your candle burns evenly.

Step 3: Melt the Gel Wax

Cut the gel wax into small chunks and melt it in a double boiler on medium heat. Avoid overheating as gel wax has a higher melting point than soy or paraffin wax. Stir gently to remove bubbles.

Step 4: Add Color and Fragrance

Once melted, add liquid dye suitable for gel wax. For fragrance, use oils designed for candles—about 1/3 ounce per pound of wax is sufficient.

Step 5: Pour and Decorate

Carefully pour a layer of gel wax into the container, then place your decorative items inside. Pour more wax slowly to avoid air bubbles. Repeat if layering.

Step 6: Cool and Trim

Allow the candle to cool completely at room temperature. Once set, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch.

Your gel candle is now ready to use or gift! They create a unique decorative piece that looks just as good unlit as when glowing.
