How to Make Soy Wax Candles

Making soy wax candles at home is a fun and creative activity that allows you to customize scents, colors, and shapes. Soy wax is natural, biodegradable, and burns cleaner than traditional paraffin wax, making it a popular choice for DIY candle makers.

Materials Needed:

  • Soy wax flakes
  • Candle wick
  • Glass or metal container
  • Double boiler or heat-safe bowl and saucepan
  • Thermometer
  • Fragrance oils (optional)
  • Dye (optional)
  • Stirring utensil

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace:
Cover your work surface with newspaper or a silicone mat to catch any spills. Make sure your containers are clean and dry.
  2. Measure the Wax:
Calculate the amount of soy wax you need based on the size of your container. A general rule is to fill the container about ¾ full with melted wax.
  3. Melt the Wax:
Place soy wax flakes in a double boiler or heat-safe bowl over simmering water. Stir occasionally until completely melted. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature; soy wax should be heated to about 170–180°F (77–82°C).
  4. Add Fragrance and Dye (Optional):
If desired, add fragrance oils and/or dye when the wax reaches around 170°F. Stir gently but thoroughly to ensure even distribution.
  5. Prepare the Wick:
Attach the wick to the bottom of your container using a wick sticker or a small amount of melted wax. Make sure it is centered and upright.
  6. Pour the Wax:
Carefully pour the melted wax into your container, leaving about ½ inch at the top. Keep the wick centered.
  7. Cool and Set:
Allow the candle to cool at room temperature for several hours. Avoid moving it during this time to prevent uneven surfaces or sinkholes.
  8. Trim the Wick:
Once the candle is completely set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch above the wax surface. Your candle is now ready to burn!
