Jelly candle wax, also known as gel wax, is a unique and eye-catching material for candle making. Its transparent, glass-like appearance allows for endless creativity, such as embedding decorations like seashells, dried flowers, or glitter. If you want to make jelly candle wax at home, here’s a clear step-by-step guide.
What Is Jelly Candle Wax?
Jelly wax is not a natural wax but a combination of mineral oil and polymer resin. This mixture gives it a jelly-like texture and high transparency, making it perfect for decorative candles.
Materials You’ll Need
- Jelly wax (gel wax base)
- Heat-safe container or pouring pot
- Wick (preferably zinc core wicks for stability)
- Candle-safe fragrance oil (optional)
- Candle-safe dye (optional)
- Glass jars or molds
- Thermometer
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Cut and Melt the Jelly Wax
Cut the jelly wax into small chunks for easier melting. Place them in a double boiler and heat slowly until fully melted. Keep the temperature around 90–95°C (194–203°F) to avoid bubbles or smoking.
2. Add Color and Fragrance (Optional)
Once melted, add candle dye sparingly for a tint, or leave it clear for a crystal look. If you want fragrance, add it at around 85–90°C (185–194°F) and stir gently.
3. Prepare Your Container and Wick
Fix your wick in the center of your glass jar using a wick holder or glue dot. Since gel wax burns hotter than soy or paraffin, choose a sturdy wick like zinc core.
4. Pour the Wax
Carefully pour the melted jelly wax into the container. Pour slowly to avoid creating bubbles. If you want to embed decorations (seashells, dried flowers, stones, etc.), pour halfway, place the items, then pour the rest.
5. Cool and Set
Let the jelly candle sit at room temperature until fully cooled and set. Avoid moving it during cooling to keep the transparency clear.
Tips for Best Results
- Do not overheat jelly wax—it can lose transparency.
- Only use candle-safe fragrance oils and dyes; other additives may cloud the wax.
- Test burn your candle to ensure the wick size works properly.
