How to Make Candles with Granulated Wax

Granulated soy wax is a favorite among candle makers who appreciate a natural, clean-burning wax that’s easy to work with. But if you’ve ever tried making candles using only granulated soy wax, you might have noticed the surface ends up uneven or rough — which can be frustrating.

Why Granulated Soy Wax Needs to Be Blended

Granulated soy wax by itself doesn’t bind smoothly when cooled. It tends to create a grainy texture and can cause cracks or sinkholes on the surface. To get that nice, smooth finish you want, it’s important to blend granulated wax with other waxes that add structure and softness.

A common, effective blend is:

  • 70% granulated soy wax
  • 30% beeswax, soft block soy wax, or paraffin wax

This mix improves burn quality, scent throw, and the candle’s appearance.

How to Make Your Candles Step-by-Step

  1. Prepare your materials: Measure your granulated wax and your additive wax carefully.
  2. Melt the wax: Use a double boiler to gently melt the wax blend — never microwave it to avoid uneven heating.
  3. Add fragrance and dye (optional): Once melted to about 65–70°C, add your fragrance oils and dye, stirring well.
  4. Pour carefully: Secure your wick in the container and slowly pour the wax blend in.
  5. Cool and trim: Let the candle cool at room temperature. Once solid, trim the wick to about 6mm.

Final Tips

  • Always test burn your candles to find the perfect wick size and wax blend for your environment.
  • Avoid rushing the cooling process; slow cooling helps prevent cracks and uneven tops.
  • Store leftover granulated wax properly to keep it clean and dry for your next batch.

With this approach, you’ll be making smooth, professional-quality candles every time!
