How to Make Candles with Coconut Wax at Home

Coconut wax candles are loved for their smooth texture, long burn time, and natural scent throw. Making them at home is surprisingly easy — all you need are the right materials and a little patience. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter, this step-by-step guide will help you create beautiful, eco-friendly candles using coconut wax.

🕯️ What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather the following materials:

  • Coconut wax – natural or blended type (soy-coconut blends work well too)
  • Fragrance oil – choose your favorite scent (optional)
  • Candle wicks – cotton or wooden wicks
  • Candle jars or molds – heat-resistant containers
  • Double boiler or wax melter
  • Thermometer
  • Stirring stick
  • Glue dots or wick stickers

🔥 Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Make sure your working area is clean, dry, and protected with paper or cloth. Place your containers on a flat surface and attach the wick in the center using a glue dot or sticker. Keep the wick upright with a wick holder or chopstick.

🌿 Step 2: Melt the Coconut Wax

Add your coconut wax to a double boiler and heat slowly. Stir occasionally to help it melt evenly.

  • Ideal melting temperature: around 170–180°F (77–82°C).
Avoid overheating, as this can affect the scent and burn quality.

🌸 Step 3: Add Fragrance Oil

Once the wax has melted completely, remove it from the heat. Allow it to cool slightly to around 160°F (70°C) before adding your fragrance oil. Stir slowly for 1–2 minutes to ensure even distribution.

  • Recommended ratio: about 6–10% fragrance oil (e.g., 30g per 500g of wax).

🫙 Step 4: Pour the Wax into Containers

Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared jars. Pour slowly to avoid air bubbles. Leave a small space at the top of the jar (about 1 cm).

❄️ Step 5: Let It Cool and Set

Allow the candles to cool at room temperature for at least 24 hours. Avoid moving them during this time — any disturbance may cause cracks or uneven surfaces.

✂️ Step 6: Trim the Wick and Enjoy

Once fully set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6–7 mm) before lighting. Your homemade coconut wax candle is now ready to enjoy!

💡 Pro Tips

  • For stronger scent throw, cure your candle for 3–5 days before burning.
  • You can blend coconut wax with soy wax for a firmer texture.
  • Always test-burn one candle before making a full batch.

Making candles with coconut wax at home is simple, rewarding, and sustainable. You’ll not only create a cozy atmosphere but also enjoy the satisfaction of handcrafting something natural and personal.
