How to Make Candles Out of Gel Wax

Gel wax, also called candle gel, is a popular choice for transparent, decorative candles. Unlike traditional wax, gel wax has a jelly-like consistency and allows for creative designs, including embedded objects, layers, and bubbles. If you’re new to gel candles, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create beautiful, professional-looking candles.

1. Prepare Your Materials

You’ll need:

  • Gel wax (clear or colored)
  • Heat-safe containers (glass or acrylic)
  • Fragrance oils suitable for gel candles
  • Candle wicks (CD wicks or ECO wicks recommended)
  • Stirring stick or stainless steel spoon
  • Double boiler or heat-safe pot for melting
  • Decorative elements (optional, like seashells, glitter, or beads)

2. Melt the Gel Wax

  • Place gel wax in a double boiler.
  • Heat gently to around 93–107°C (200–225°F).
  • Stir slowly to avoid introducing air bubbles.
  • Do not overheat; gel wax becomes too thin above 110°C and may lose clarity.

3. Prepare the Containers

  • Preheat containers slightly to 65°C (150°F) to prevent cracking and bubbles.
  • Fix your wick in the center using a wick holder or pencil.

4. Add Fragrance and Color

  • For scented candles, add fragrance oils specifically for gel wax once melted.
  • Recommended ratio: 0.5–1% of the total wax weight.
  • Stir gently to evenly distribute the fragrance.

5. Add Decorative Items (Optional)

  • You can embed objects like seashells, beads, or glitter for creative effects.
  • Place them carefully in the container before pouring the gel wax.

6. Pour the Gel Wax

  • Pour slowly along the side of the container to reduce bubbles.
  • For layered designs, allow each layer to set slightly before adding the next (around 30–45 minutes).

7. Cool and Set

  • Let the candle cool naturally for 4–6 hours.
  • For best results, allow a full 12–24 hours cure time before lighting.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking or cloudiness.

8. Trim the Wick and Enjoy

  • Once fully set, trim the wick to about 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 inch).
  • Your gel candle is now ready to display or gift!
