While many people enjoy using it in its dry, grainy form, melting granulated wax opens up even more creative possibilities. Step 1: Gather Your Materials
To make a candle from melted granulated wax, you’ll need:
- Granulated wax (soy-based or paraffin-based)
- A heat-resistant pouring pot
- A double boiler setup
- Fragrance oil (optional)
- Candle dye (optional)
- Wicks and containers or molds
Step 2: Melt the Granulated Wax
Start by placing your granulated wax in a double boiler or a heat-safe pouring pot over low to medium heat. Allow the wax to melt slowly, stirring occasionally. Avoid direct heat, as it can cause discoloration or overheating. The ideal melting temperature is between 70°C–85°C (160°F–185°F).
Step 3: Add Color and Fragrance
Once the wax is fully melted, you can enhance it with dye or fragrance oil.
- For color: Add a small amount of candle dye and stir until the color is uniform.
- For fragrance: Add 6–10% fragrance oil by weight when the wax cools to around 70°C (160°F). Stir gently to ensure the scent blends evenly.
Step 4: Prepare the Wick and Container
Place a wick in the center of your chosen container or mold. Use a wick holder or stick to keep it straight. Preheat the container slightly so the wax adheres well and prevents surface cracking as it cools.
Step 5: Pour the Wax
Slowly pour the melted wax into the container, leaving a little space at the top. Pouring too quickly may create air bubbles. Allow the candle to cool naturally at room temperature—avoid refrigeration, which can cause uneven surfaces.
Step 6: Curing and Finishing
Let the candle cure for at least 24 hours before burning. If you’ve added fragrance, waiting 48–72 hours allows the scent to stabilize and perform better. Once cooled, trim the wick to about 5mm (¼ inch), and your candle is ready to use or sell.
