Pearl wax (also known as sand wax or wax beads) is popular for candle-making because it’s easy to handle and melts smoothly. Whether you’re preparing it for direct candle use or for remelting into containers, here’s how you can safely heat pearl wax:
Step 1: Choose Your Heating Method
You can heat pearl wax using:
- Double Boiler Method: Place the wax pearls in a heat-safe bowl or pot over boiling water. This is the safest and most recommended method.
- Wax Heater / Melter: If you make candles regularly, a wax melter or heater provides consistent results.
- Microwave (Small Batches): Use a microwave-safe container, heating in short intervals of 30 seconds, stirring in between.
Step 2: Monitor Temperature
Use a thermometer to keep track of the wax temperature. Most pearl wax melts at 50–65°C (122–149°F). Avoid overheating, as this can discolor the wax or reduce scent throw.
Step 3: Stir Gently
As the wax melts, stir occasionally to ensure even heating and prevent burning on one side.
Step 4: Add Fragrance or Color (Optional)
Once fully melted, you can add fragrance oils or candle dyes before pouring into your mold or container.
