How Many Drops of Fragrance Oil to Gel Wax

When making gel candles, one of the most important factors that determines their final quality is fragrance balance. Many beginners ask — how many drops of fragrance oil should I add to gel wax? Adding too little results in a weak scent, while too much can make the gel cloudy or even affect burning safety.

Unlike soy or paraffin wax, gel wax has a limited fragrance load. Because of its transparent structure and mineral oil base, it can only hold a small amount of fragrance safely — typically 0.5% to 1% of the total wax weight.

For example:

  • If you’re using 500g of gel wax, add 2.5g to 5g of fragrance oil (that’s roughly 50–100 drops, depending on the dropper size).
  • For 1kg of gel wax, add 5g to 10g of fragrance oil (about 100–200 drops).

Always make sure to use fragrance oils specifically designed for gel candles. Regular candle or essential oils may separate, cloud the wax, or cause overheating.

To blend properly, heat your gel wax to around 95–100°C (203–212°F), then add the fragrance slowly while stirring gently. Avoid whipping or stirring too fast — that can trap air bubbles and reduce clarity.

If you want a stronger scent, choose high-quality concentrated fragrance oils instead of increasing the amount. Overloading gel wax with oil can make it unstable or flammable, which is dangerous during burning.

For best results, always test a small batch before full production to find the perfect scent strength for your design.
