How Long Does It Take for Gel Wax to Melt

If you’re working with gel wax for the first time, one of the most common questions is: how long does it take for gel wax to melt? The answer depends on your heat source, the type of gel wax, and how much you’re melting at once.

Gel wax, also called candle gel, is made from mineral oil and a polymer resin. Unlike traditional wax, it has a thick, transparent, jelly-like texture that melts more slowly. Typically, gel wax takes between 20 to 40 minutes to melt completely, depending on your setup.

If you’re melting a small batch (under 500g) using a double boiler, it usually melts within 20 to 25 minutes. Larger batches or melting in a pot directly over low heat may take closer to 30–40 minutes. Always heat gently—rapid heating can create bubbles, cloudiness, or even damage the structure of the gel.

The ideal melting temperature for most gel waxes is around 95°C to 105°C (203°F to 221°F). It should look completely transparent and fluid before you add fragrance or pour it into containers. Make sure not to overheat the gel, as temperatures above 110°C (230°F) can cause it to become too thin or introduce unwanted air bubbles.

For the best results, stir the wax gently while it melts and keep an eye on its clarity. Once it becomes smooth and bubble-free, it’s ready to use. Patience is key—slow, steady heating ensures a crystal-clear, professional-looking gel candle every time.
