While most candle makers try to avoid bubbles in gel wax, sometimes those little air pockets are exactly what you want! Bubbles can make gel candles look lively, like fizzy soda or sparkling water. If you’re making ocean, drink, or aquarium-themed candles, bubbles can add a beautiful decorative effect. Here’s how to intentionally create and control bubbles in gel wax for creative designs.
1. Heat the Gel Wax Quickly
To produce more bubbles, melt your gel wax at a slightly higher temperature than usual (around 110°C–120°C / 230°F–248°F). Heating too fast traps more air inside the gel, creating visible bubbles when you pour.
👉 Tip: Don’t overheat the wax, or it may become too thin and release all the bubbles before cooling.
2. Stir Vigorously
Unlike when you’re aiming for clarity, this time you actually want to stir faster. Use a stainless-steel spoon or stick and whip the gel wax quickly for 30–60 seconds. This introduces plenty of small air pockets that will stay suspended as the wax cools.
3. Pour at a Lower Temperature
To lock bubbles in place, pour the wax when it’s around 85°C–95°C (185°F–203°F). Cooler wax thickens faster, which helps trap the bubbles before they rise to the surface.
4. Add Decorative Elements
Add stones, shells, glitter, or wax embeds while the gel is still hot. These objects help hold bubbles around them and create an eye-catching design.
👉 For example:
- In “ocean candles,” bubbles around seashells and fish figures look natural.
- In “drink candles,” bubbles make the candle look like soda or champagne.
5. Experiment with Pouring Technique
Try pouring from a higher distance (about 15–20 cm above the container). The impact of the hot wax against the bottom introduces air naturally, resulting in a fizzy effect.
6. Cool Rapidly
Once poured, place your candle in a cool environment to slow the release of bubbles. Do not cover or insulate it—rapid cooling helps preserve the bubbles before they escape.
7. Optional: Add a Little Oil
A small amount of mineral oil or baby oil can make the wax texture slightly looser, helping bubbles form more easily. Add about 1–2% of the total wax weight before pouring.
In summary, creating bubbles in gel wax is all about controlling heat, stirring, and cooling. With the right technique, you can design candles that shimmer with fun, decorative bubbles—perfect for themed collections or gifts.
