While most candle makers try to avoid bubbles in gel wax, sometimes those little air pockets are exactly what you want! Bubbles can make gel candles look lively, like fizzy soda or sparkling water. If you’re making ocean, drink, or aquarium-themed candles, bubbles can add a beautiful decorative effect. Here’s how to intentionally create and control bubbles in gel wax for creative designs.
1. Heat the Gel Wax Quickly
To produce more bubbles, melt your gel wax at a slightly higher temperature than usual (around 110°C–120°C / 230°F–248°F). Heating too fast traps more air inside the gel, creating visible bubbles when you pour.

2. Stir Vigorously

3. Pour at a Lower Temperature

5. Experiment with Pouring Technique
Try pouring from a higher distance (about 15–20 cm above the container). The impact of the hot wax against the bottom introduces air naturally, resulting in a fizzy effect.
6. Cool Rapidly
Once poured, place your candle in a cool environment to slow the release of bubbles. Do not cover or insulate it—rapid cooling helps preserve the bubbles before they escape.
7. Optional: Add a Little Oil
A small amount of mineral oil or baby oil can make the wax texture slightly looser, helping bubbles form more easily. Add about 1–2% of the total wax weight before pouring.
