Beeswax wraps are a natural, reusable alternative to plastic wrap. They’re perfect for covering bowls, wrapping sandwiches, or storing produce, and they help reduce waste in the kitchen. Making them at home is simple, fun, and cost-effective.
You’ll need:
- 100% cotton fabric (lightweight, pre-washed)
- Beeswax pellets or grated beeswax
- Optional: pine resin (for extra stickiness)
- Optional: jojoba oil (for flexibility)
- Parchment paper
- An iron or oven
- Baking tray (if using oven)
Steps:
- Prepare the Fabric
Cut your cotton fabric into the sizes you need. Common dimensions are 8″x8″ for small wraps, 12″x12″ for medium, and 14″x14″ for large. Pinked edges help prevent fraying. - Mix Your Wax Blend (Optional but recommended)
For better performance, mix:- 100g beeswax
- 20g pine resin
- 10g jojoba oil
Melt the mixture over low heat until combined.
- Apply the Wax
- Oven method: Place fabric on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Evenly sprinkle beeswax (or pour melted blend) over the fabric. Bake at 80–90°C (175–195°F) for 5–7 minutes until melted.
- Iron method: Place fabric between two sheets of parchment paper. Sprinkle beeswax on top, then iron gently until melted and evenly absorbed.
- Spread and Absorb
Use a clean brush or spatula to spread melted wax evenly, making sure every inch is coated. - Cool and Cure
Hang or hold the wrap for a few seconds to let it cool and stiffen. It will be ready to use right away.
Care Tips:
- Wash in cool water with mild soap; never use hot water.
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Refresh by reheating and adding more wax as needed.
