Can You Mix Soy Wax and Gel Wax?

When it comes to candle making, both soy wax and gel wax are loved for their unique beauty. Soy wax is known for its creamy texture and eco-friendly origin, while gel wax is famous for its crystal-clear look. But can you actually mix the two to create something special?

The short answer is yes, you can mix soy wax and gel wax—but only in small proportions and with the right technique. These two waxes have different structures and melting points. Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil and melts between 49°C and 82°C, while gel wax is made from mineral oil and polymer resin and melts at around 93°C to 115°C.

If you add a small amount of soy wax (usually under 20%) into gel wax, the result is a slightly cloudy gel that gives a soft, frosted appearance. Some candle makers use this intentionally for decorative effects. However, too much soy wax will cause separation, poor burning performance, and loss of transparency.

When trying this combination, always use high-density gel wax, melt the blend slowly around 90–100°C, and stir evenly. Avoid using water-based dyes or essential oils—they are not suitable for gel candles. Also, use only gel-safe fragrance oils and metal-free wicks to ensure safety.

In summary, mixing soy wax and gel wax is possible for creative designs, but it requires testing and attention to detail. Always conduct a burn test before production to make sure the candle performs safely and beautifully.
