How to Make Jelly Wax Melts

Jelly wax melts are a fun and creative alternative to traditional wax melts. With their translucent, bouncy texture and strong fragrance throw, they can add a playful yet elegant touch to your home fragrance collection. If you’ve been curious about making them yourself, here’s a complete guide to get you started.

What Are Jelly Wax Melts?

Jelly wax melts are made using gel wax (also called jelly wax), which has a rubbery, transparent texture. Unlike soy or paraffin melts, jelly wax melts last longer and can hold more fragrance oil, giving a stronger scent release.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Jelly wax (gel wax)
  • Fragrance oil (compatible with gel wax, up to 5–8%)
  • Heat-safe glass or metal pouring pot
  • Silicone molds or clamshell molds
  • Color dyes (optional, liquid dye works best for gel wax)
  • Thermometer

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Melt the Jelly Wax

Place the jelly wax into a heat-safe container and use a double boiler to slowly melt it. Keep the temperature around 200°F (93°C). Do not overheat, as gel wax can burn.

2. Add Color (Optional)

Once melted, stir in a small amount of liquid dye if you want your wax melts to have color. Remember, jelly wax is translucent, so colors will appear see-through.

3. Blend in Fragrance

Allow the wax to cool slightly to 185°F (85°C) before adding fragrance oil. Mix thoroughly but gently to avoid creating bubbles.

4. Pour into Molds

Carefully pour the mixture into silicone or clamshell molds. Silicone molds are great for fun shapes, while clamshells are convenient for storage.

5. Cool and Set

Let the melts cool completely at room temperature. Once firm, remove them from the mold and store in airtight containers to preserve fragrance.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always use fragrance oils specifically labeled as gel-wax safe.
  • Avoid using materials like dried flowers or glitter inside jelly wax melts, as they can pose a fire risk.
  • Work slowly when stirring to prevent bubbles from forming in the gel.
